How to identify a male NPT fitting without measuring the wrong part

Where to place a tapered male thread, what TPI can confirm, and why a female fitting body is not a sizing surface.

The diameter changes along an NPT thread

NPT threads taper, so a caliper reading depends on where it is taken. That is why one exact diameter is a poor identification rule for the threaded end.

A true-scale NPT reference can use a band from the smaller end crest toward the standard pipe outside diameter. If the visible thread silhouette falls in that band, it suggests a nominal size; it does not certify taper, sealing, or condition.

Place the correct surface on the gauge

  1. Face the male threaded opening or nipple end straight toward the screen.
  2. Center the circular thread silhouette instead of aligning a single side.
  3. Keep the part square to the screen so taper is not exaggerated by tilt.
  4. Check the TPI across several clean thread crests.
  5. Confirm with the marking or a known mating part by hand.

For a female fitting, use another clue

The outside of a female elbow, coupling, valve, or adapter is not standardized to nominal pipe OD. Its entrance is tapered and can also be misleading. Use an attached smooth pipe section, a known male mating part, or the cast, stamped, or printed size.
